It’s that time of year when, whether you’re a fan of tennis or not, you can’t escape the fact that Wimbledon has started.
It’s a sporting event that has become synonymous with British summertime, not only because it takes starts on the last Monday in June but also because our television screens become full of happy people donning hats and sunglasses to enjoy their strawberries and cream in the sunshine while watching tennis legends compete to win the coveted Grand Slam title. Unless there’s a rain delay; it is British summertime after all.
If you’re an avid Wimbledon watcher, you might find yourself ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the screen as the umpire calls a close shot out or as a player fails to reach the ball in time and loses the point. But have you ever thought of giving it a go yourself?
Here are 5 reasons why you should grab a racket and give tennis a go:
1. Buddy Up
Although you can practice your skills by hitting the ball against a wall, tennis is a great social sport! Grab a buddy and get competitive. You can even couple up and play Doubles to really crank up the competitive spirit amongst your friends.
2. Any Age Welcome
Tennis is an ACE sport (see what we did there) for young and old alike and really can become a lifetime sport. You can introduce your youngest relative to the sport. Tennis is great for developing hand-eye co-ordination and young children also love being the ball girl or boy. You can even bring along your gran or grandad to make it a family affair.
3. Get A Sweat On
You could burn between 300 and 400 calories during a medium intensity tennis game.
That’s more than if you were to do a 5k run! Need we say more?
4. Work Those Muscles
Not only is tennis good for calorie-burning but it’ll give you a great overall workout too! Although tennis works your arms, it will obviously bring more benefit to your dominant side than the other. Your core, glutes, quads and hamstrings will all be put through their paces as you keep up with your opponent.
5. Exercise Your Mind
When we said overall workout, we meant it!
Tennis is great for keeping you on your toes and making sure your mind stays active. A quick response rate and agility are needed to get the most out of a match so your brain will learn to stay alert and focussed on the game. #OnTheBall
